history of shito ryu shukokai

The Shito-Ryu school of Karate was founded by Soke Kenwa Mabuni (1889 - 1952). Mabuni Sensei trained under two of the greatest masters of Okinawan Karate Ankoh Itosu (Shuri-Te) and Kanryo Higaonna (Naha-Te). It is out of respect for both his Sensei that he took characters from both names to form the name for his eclectic school of Karate, Shito-Ryu.

Incorporating both the Naha-Te and the Shuri-Te systems together with Katas from the Chinese White Crane system that he had learnt from a Chinese tea merchant living on Okinawa at the time, the legendary Go Ken Ki, or in his own tongue Wu Xianhui.
In 1929 Mabuni left Okinawa for mainland Japan and located himself in Osaka.
